 The Social Fund is a scheme to help people with expenses that are difficult to meet from a low income:
- Winter Fuel Payments,
- Cold Weather Payments,
- Funeral Payments.
 Advances of Benefit are a form of payment that replaced the discretionary Social Fund:
- Short-term advances,
- Budgeting advances,
- Budgeting loans.
 Local Welfare Provision are discretionary schemes intended to help those facing a crisis or short-term unavoidable need:
- England: Local Welfare Provision,
- Scotland: Scottish Welfare Fund,
- Wales: Discretionary Assistance Fund.
The information in this factsheet is correct for the period April 2015 — April 2016. Benefit rates and other figures are expected to increase again in April 2016 but rules and figures sometimes change during the year.
